Garci Sanchez de Badajoz

Badajóz el musico has 8 pieces in the Cancionero de Palacio (all on unrequited love), and 2 in a Petrucci publication of 1516.  He may have spent time in Italy, but in 1521 Badajos is listed as musician (instrumentalist) to John III of Portugal.  It’s not unreasonable to assume he was from the town of the same name on the border with Portugal.

O desdichado de mi

This soulful villancico for men’s voices a3 is #49 of the 468 pieces in the Cancionero de Palacio, thus likely to be an early work.  The edition is from the Monumentos transcription by Angles.

now I never hope for ease, I am defeated.
