Diomedes Cato

Diomedes Cato composer and lutenist was born in Northern Italy about 1560.  Being Protestant the family left Italy for Poland while Diomedes was a child and settled in Krakow.  In 1588 he was lutenist at the court of Sigismund III of Poland for several years.  His considerable instrumental output includes dances, fantasias, and preludes for both solo lute and ensemble.  No record of him survives after 1620.

Fantasia

Successive points of imitation characterize this Fantasia as is the case with much instrumental and vocal work of the 16th century.
