John Johnson

John Johnson was probably born in the early 1540s and, according to Diana Poulton, was the earliest member of the great English lutenist school of the late 16th century. In 1579 he became one of Queen Elizabeth’s 3 lutenists serving in that position until his death in 1594. His son, Robert, b. c. 1583, became a more famous and prolific musician, especially for the 17th century Court Masque.
