Antoine de LaCourt

As of the ‘New Grove’ (1980), 2 motets are the only works by Antoine de LaCourt that have survived, although other works by him (including 2 Mass settings) are referred to in contemporary accounts. The motet heard here is in praise of Emperor Charles V.  Antoine de LaCourt was a member of the Imperial Chapel, Brussels, when Charles V abdicated there in 1556 . . . it was probably written for that occasion. Antoine de LaCourt went on to serve the Hapsburgs in Innsbruck, Vienna and Prague where he would have worked with some of the greatest musicians of the later 16th century . . . Monte, Gallus, Regnart . . . He died in Prague, September 1600.
