Badajoz

Badajóz el musico has 8 pieces in the Cancionero de Palacio (all on unrequited love), and 2 in a Petrucci publication of 1516.  He may have spent time in Italy, but in 1521 Badajos is listed as musician (instrumentalist) to John III of Portugal.

O desdichado de mi

This soulful villancico for men’s voices a3 is #49 of the 468 pieces in the Cancionero de Palacio, thus likely to be an early work.  The edition is from the Monumentos transcription by Angles.

Badajoz: O desdichado

by Concentus Musicus MN, Arthur Maud, dir. | Concentus cantorum, 'Age of Discovery', 1978

Woe is me! for whoever sees your

beauty has

no hope of freedom from that bondage.

I weep for my freedom . . . I am

condemned to death.

I weep at my fate, knowing that you

forget me

. . . Or detest me.  To see your beauty

Is to be captivated and willingly

vanquished.
