Gustav Düben

Gustav Düben was born the son of Andreas a musician at Court of Gustav II Adolph of Sweden in Stockholm around 1628.  Gustav, himself, became a Court musician in 1648 and succeeded his father as Court Chapelmaster in 1663, as well as Organist of the German Church in Stockholm.  He died there in 1690.

Veni Sancte Spiritus

Martin Luther, himself, was not averse to the use of Latin in the Lutheran service.  Here we have another example–the text of a Gregorian antiphon for the Invocation of the Holy Spirit set for the musicians of the Swedish Court in 1651.  The forces employed include a choir a4 with instruments a4 plus continuo.  Considerable duplication between the vocal and instrumental parts is seen.
