Juan de Anchieta

Juan de Anchieta was born c. 1462 in Azpeitia, near San Sebastian in N. Spain to a prominent Basque family. By 1489 he was a singer in Isabella’s chapel and music master to Prince Juan. About 1500 he took holy orders, received benefices at Salamanca and Granada, and was named Rector of a parish in Azpeitia, yet continued his life at Court. When Isabella died in 1504 he joined her daughter Juana’s chapel and remained with Juana at Tordesillas after her husband, Philip’s, death. In 1519 Anchieta retired with a substantial pension “for many excellent services rendered”, and died in the town where he was born in 1523.

Con amores, mi madre

This lively villancico is one of the 468 pieces found in the ‘Cancionero Musical de Palacio’, edited and transcribed by Higinio Anglés and published by the Instituto Español de Musicología in the series ‘Monumentos de la Musica Española’ Vol. 10. “Con amores” is notable for it’s meter–5/4 in modern notation–quite rare in 15th and 16th century music.

Juan de Anchieta "Con amores, mi madre"

by Concentus Musicus MN, Arthur Maud, dir., 'Food of Love' 1987, Mary Earl - soprano

Con amores mi madre,
Con amores m’a dormi,
Con amores m’a dormi.
Asi dormida soñava
Lo que’l coraçon velava,
Que’l amor me consolava
Con mas bien que mereçi,
Con mas bien que mereçi.

Adormeçiome el favor
Qu’amor me dio con amor;
Dio descanso a mi dolor
La fe con que le servi.

Translation:
In love, mother,
In love, I fell asleep;
And, once asleep, I dreamed
What my heart had kept hidden.
That love consoled me
More fully than I deserved.

To sleep went the favor
That love lovingly gave me.
The faith with which I served it
Gave respite to my pain.

Juan de Anchieta "M. de Nuestra Señora - Credo"

by Concentus Musicus MN, Arthur Maud, dir., Vocal Ensemble 'Spanish Golden Age' 1970, William Pohl, cond.

Text:
Confiteor unum batisma in remissionem peccatorum. Et exspecto resurrectionem mortuorum. Et vitam venturi saeculi. Amen.
Translation:
I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible; And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father; by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; he suffered and was buried; and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father; and he shall come again, with glory, to judge both the quick and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord, and giver of Life, who proceedeth from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified; who spake by the Prophets. And I believe one catholic and Apostolic Church; I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins; and I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen..
