Truid Aagesen
Truid Aagesen was organist at Vor Frue Kirche (now Cathedral) in Copenhagen from 1593 to 1613 when he was “let go” for his Popish activities. His only published work is a collection of ‘Cantiones’ (Hamburg 1608)–Italian canzonette for three voices, dedicated to King Christian IV, who sent a number of Danish musicians to study in Venice under Giovanni Gabrieli c. 1600. The ‘Cantiones’ are, no doubt, the fruits of such a journey.

Text:
Cantate ninf’in torno
Al mio belsol adorno.
In dolc’e vagh’accenti
Accordatele volci, miel contenti.
Translation:
Sing, nymphes, around
My bright and beautiful sun.
Accompany my happy words
With sweet and lovely strains.

Emilia, mia gentile
Canzonetta a3 from Aagesen’s ‘Cantiones’ 1608, edited in ‘Dania Sonans, ii’, 1966 by Jens Peter Jacobsen. The melodic perfect fifth continues to hold its beauty through the centuries.
Truid Aagesen "Emilia, mia gentile" • Concentus Musicus MN, Arthur Maud, dir.
Emilia mia gentile
Mentre cupido miro
Con quanta gratia ti revolv’in giro,
Preg’Amor que mi facia
Lieto danzar fra le tue belle braccia.
My gentle Emilia,
While I, full of desire, see
How gracefully you turn round and round,
I pray to Cupid that he will let me
Dance joyfully between your beautiful arms.
Hor ch’io son giunto
Canzonetta a3 from Aagesen’s ‘Cantiones’ 1608, edited in ‘Dania Sonans, ii’, 1966 by Jens Peter Jacobsen
Truid Aagesen "Hor ch'io son giunto" • Concentus Musicus MN, Arthur Maud, dir.
Hor ch’io son giunto quivi
Fra questi boschi e rivi
E quest’ herbete tenere
Io vo’ cantar del fier fanciul
di venere.
Now that I have come here
Among these woods and streams
And these soft pastures,
I will sing of Venus’ wanton boy.
Sel vostro volto

Truid Aagesen "Sel vostro volto" • Concentus Musicus MN, Arthur Maud, dir.
Sel vostro volto e d’un aria gentile
Ei bei vostr’ occhi son due fiamm’ ardenti
In voi dunque ci sono due elementi.
As your face has a gentle air,
And your eyes are two burning flames,
Then there are two elements in you.
