Truid Aagesen

Truid Aagesen was organist at Vor Frue Kirche (now Cathedral) in Copenhagen from 1593 to 1613 when he was “let go” for his Popish activities. His only published work is a collection of ‘Cantiones’ (Hamburg 1608)–Italian canzonette for three voices, dedicated to King Christian IV, who sent a number of Danish musicians to study in Venice under Giovanni Gabrieli c. 1600. The ‘Cantiones’ are, no doubt, the fruits of such a journey.

My gentle Emilia,
While I, full of desire, see
How gracefully you turn round and round,
I pray to Cupid that he will let me
Dance joyfully between your beautiful arms.

And these soft pastures,
I will sing of Venus’ wanton boy.
